Pc charged with Manx student's death drove at 'nearly twice the speed limit'

A jury has heard a policeman was driving his patrol car at nearly twice the speed limit, without lights or sirens, when he hit and killed a Manx university student in Sheffield.

Nineteen-year-old Jamie Haslett was crossing a road on the way back to his accommodation when he was struck in the early hours of October 27 2010.

The trial of Pc Rodney Mills, who denies a charge of causing death by careless driving, began at Bradford Crown Court yesterday.

The prosecution said Pc Mills was travelling at 58mph in a 30mph zone, adding that police drivers were not always bound by the rules of the road but must "maintain a standard of safety".

He was driving back to the police station before responding to a silent 999 call when he struck Mr Haslett.

The trial continues.
