A union boss hopes the end of Mezeron's daily freight service between the Isle of Man and Liverpool will act as a 'wake-up call'.
The service, in direct competition with the Steam Packet, was only launched in October but is due to end a week today (February 19), after it failed to meet volume growth and profitability.
RMT general secretary Bob Crow believes Mezeron's operation was an 'opportunist move to undermine the Steam Packet'.
But he says the Packet now needs to provide better services for the travelling public:
