Two hundred and seventy-six vehicles were stopped during Operation Uplift.

It's part of efforts by the Isle of Man Constabulary to raise awareness of the darker nights and change in weather conditions.

The annual winter check started on 27 October and ended this weekend.

During the three weeks, officers from the Roads Policing Team worked alongside partners from the Vehicle Testing Centre and Customs and Excise.

POWDERS

The roadside inspections saw vehicles checked against the POWDERS checklist:

  • P - Petrol (fuel): Ensure you have enough petrol, diesel or electric for your journey. This will help you to avoid breaking down and potentially putting yourself and others at risk.
  • O - Oil: Check the engine oil level using the dipstick. Maintaining the correct oil level is essential to prevent your engine from seizing up and breaking down.
  • W - Water: Check coolant/antifreeze levels and always keep your screen wash topped up so you can clear any debris or dirt off your windscreen.
  • D - Damage: Inspect the vehicle for any new damage, including lights, mirrors, and the windscreen.
  • E - Electrics: Check that all lights (headlights, brake lights, and indicators) are working correctly; they are not only essential for you, they are also essential for other drivers to understand how you are driving your vehicle and how you intend to manoeuvre.
  • R - Rubber: Examine the tires for tread depth, pressure, and damage. Also, check the condition of wiper blades.
  • S - Self: Make sure you are fit to drive, not tired, and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Ensure all documents are in order so that you and the vehicle are road legal; driving licence, insurance, tax, registration etc.

RESULTS

Two hundred and seventy-six vehicles were stopped with 136 found with a form of defect, some with multiple.

In total, 168 defects were recorded from:

  • 105 having faulty lights,
  • 44 worn tyres
  • 19 others with issues ranging from exhausts, wipers, washer fluids, horns or missing or damaged wing mirrors.

Eleven vehicles were also found with expired tax discs.

One hundred and fifteen drivers were issued with defect rectification notices with seven days to address it.

Thirteen motorists were given endorsable fixed penalty notices, which are a fine and points -  the majority for illegal tyres.

Seven were reported for summons for offences such as having no insurance, licence or tax, and using a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Meanwhile, five motorists were arrested for drink or drug driving.

The constabulary says while it does the annual campaign to raise awareness of the risks from using defective vehicles during the darker nights, officers routinely stop and check vehicles and drivers during the year.
