'No longer a viable business' says Patel
Onchan’s postmaster has confirmed he will be closing the doors to Kirk Onchan’s Post Office in August.
Hassan Patel says a new contract offered by government means it’s ‘no longer a viable business’.
Mr Patel, and his wife Haf, have run the facility on Main Road for 12 years but will stop trading on 3 August.
In a post on Facebook he said: “Following six months' notice that all government services would be removed, the new contract offered to us was effectively reduced to providing parcel and stamp services only.
“After careful consideration I decided not to sign the new agreement as it was no longer a viable business.
“It has been a privilege to serve the people of Onchan and the wider Isle of Man.
“We are proud to have remained open throughout the COVID lockdowns and to have built so many friendships along the way.
“Who would have thought that walking in to buy a stamp would one day lead to owning a Sub-Post Office!”
The couple say they are leaving with ‘many happy memories’ and have thanked customers for their support, loyalty and friendship.
