Commissioner Gabriella Corkish says her decision has not been taken lightly

Onchan's first candidate has declared their intention to stand in this year's General Election.

Gabriella Corkish is currently one of the district commissioners there, and says her decision to stand has not been taken lightly.

In a statement, she says her focus will be on improving integration with Health and Social Care, strengthening support for children and vulnerable adults, increasing transparency and addressing the cost and accessibility of travel to and from the Island.

She adds she'll be prioritising infrastructure improvements, education provision, food security, and ensuring that pensioners and vulnerable households receive support that is both targeted and genuinely effective.

While the 20-year-old admits some will question her age and experience, she says she doesn't accept them as barriers.

"There is a clear expectation from the public that policies should not only be announced but also properly delivered.

"It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that, at present, this standard is not being met consistently.

"I intend to offer a more open, accountable, and outcomes-focused approach to representation, one that is grounded in delivery rather than assurance."

This year's election is taking place on Thursday 24 September, and you can find out more on our dedicated election mini-site here.
