DoI 'determined to find the right solutions', says minister

The infrastructure minister assures 'nothing is set in stone' as a consultation into the introduction of 20mph limits on certain roads in the north goes live.

The consultations form part of a rolling programme across the Island being undertaken by the department.

The move follows Tynwald's support for a policy to introduce 20mph zones in residential areas

Michelle Haywood says her department is 'determined to find the right solutions for every community'.

Meanwhile, the consultation for the central area of the Island will open on 1 September, and for the south on 3 November.

Government says the proposed 20mph speed limit aims to:

  • Support healthier lifestyles by making walking and cycling safer and more appealing.
  • Foster more inclusive and people-friendly streets, where shared space benefits all road users.
  • Improve road safety, reducing the risk and severity of collisions for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
  • Encourage considerate driving by creating an environment where slower speeds are the norm.
  • Reduce noise and air pollution, contributing to a cleaner, quieter environment.

Minister Haywood adds: 'Gathering local knowledge and experience is a vital part of this process and will continue to be a key feature of further consultations taking place later in the year as this project rolls out across the Island.

‘I would urge anyone interested in the proposals to look at the maps on the website to see what is planned.

‘The Department welcomes all responses from the public. Please remember, nothing is set in stone. We are keen to hear from as many people as possible to achieve the best possible outcomes.

‘The feedback will play an important part in decision-making.’
