No unusual number of HMPV infections on Island

Public Health says it's not been made aware of an unusual number of Human Metapneumovirus infections on the Island. 

In recent weeks there have been rising cases of HMPV in China and further afield. 

However Deputy Director Dr Ross Keat says it's a common winter illness. 

He adds Public Health will support healthcare teams and institutions in the event of increased cases. 

Symptoms of HMPV are similar to a cold and usually get better by themselves but can sometimes cause serious lung infections which can be harmful for babies and older adults.

Anyone with symptoms of HMPV, or any respiratory illness, is advised to stay at home until they are better, practice good hygiene, drink plenty of fluids and stay away from other people.
