'No merit' to restructuring Department of Home Affairs

Minister says decision will provide stability

No changes to the constitution of the Department of Home Affairs – or its functions – will be made.

Government says there's no merit in restructuring following a review into the future operation of the department which included the possibility of dissolving it entirely. 

Minister Jane Poole-Wilson says the decision will provide the stability needed to deliver 'hugely important' pieces of legislation including a new Domestic Abuse Act.

The department is also recruiting a permanent chief executive – the current post holder has been in place, as an interim, for more than three years:
