Gary Clueit supports greater transparency but questions the urgency of reform proposals
Newly elected Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) Gary Clueit used his maiden speech in Tynwald to address a motion on reforming the role and election process of MLCs.
The motion, proposed by Onchan MHK Julie Edge, called for several changes, including preventing MLCs from serving on government departments, requiring candidates to secure public support before nomination, and introducing term limits.
While Mr Clueit acknowledged the importance of transparency - expressing support for a requirement that candidates declare their interests before standing for election - he warned that more pressing issues should take priority over legislative reform:
Debate on the proposals continues, with members considering potential changes to the composition and function of the Legislative Council.
