New tobacco laws aim to reduce cancers in Island

New measures to deter the Manx public from smoking are on the way.

If amendments to a public health bill become law, open displays of cigarettes and tobacco in shops would be banned, along with vending machines. 

There would be curbs on tobacco advertising and in the future, measures to ban smoking in cars where children are present.

The proposals were consulted on in 2012, and a draft bill goes out to public consultation on Monday (8 Dec)

Health minister Howard Quayle says the aim is to encourage people to kick the habit, and prevent others from starting to smoke.

He says the bill is driven by health concerns:
