Deal could lessen appeal of govt jobs

A landmark deal on terms and conditions for Island civil servants and other public sector workers is expected to save the  government £1 million a year.

Unions representing 4,000 staff have agreed a package of reforms for new recruits, after lengthy talks with the employers' body the Public Services Commission.

Reduced pay scales and overtime rates, along with changes in holiday entitlement and sick pay, were agreed by Prospect and Unite, who balloted members over the deal.

Commission chairman John Shimmin admits the changes could make government positions less attractive - but says the reforms will safeguard public sector jobs long-term.
