New Gynaecology Ambulatory Unit set to open at Noble's Hospital

First stage of wider hospital ward reconfiguration programme begins today

Manx Care is set to open a new Gynaecology Ambulatory Unit (GAU) at Noble’s Hospital today, marking the first stage in a wider programme of inpatient ward reconfiguration taking place throughout 2025.

The GAU, which includes an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, will assess and treat urgent gynaecological conditions in an outpatient setting, reducing the need for overnight admissions.

Most patients expected to use the unit will be those experiencing early pregnancy complications.

The development comes following feedback from the Women’s Health Strategy survey, which identified the need for dedicated facilities for pregnancy and pregnancy loss.

The adjoining Bluebell Suite – created for families experiencing miscarriage or baby loss – was funded by the Friends of Noble’s Hospital.

With the GAU opening, work will begin to redevelop Ward 4 into a dedicated stroke unit, including therapy spaces and improved access to outdoor areas to support rehabilitation.

Later phases of the programme include:

  • A combined Surgical and Gynae Unit in Wards 7 and 8,
  • A new Short Stay Assessment Unit in Ward 2, with a focus on patients requiring observation and those who are frail.
