New commissioners set out their stalls

One of the two newly elected members of Onchan Commissioners says he realises it will be difficult to make big changes during his six-month term as a member of the board.

Chartered accountant John Quaye was speaking after topping the poll in yesterday's by-election, in which 19 per cent of the electorate took part.

Mr Quaye received 687 votes, which beat the other successful candidate, port security officer Robin Turton, by just over 100.

Despite the short term of office, Mr Quaye knows the direction he wants to take (first part of audio file):

Last month, Onchan Commissioners withdrew their support for the kerbside recycling scheme, believing the benefits environmentally and financially were not worthwhile.

The number of votes cast for each of the five candidates was as follows: John Quaye, 687; Robin Turton, 583; Rob Callister, 384; Kathryn Williams, 373; and James Corrin, 322.
