Programme combines professional qualifications, academic learning, and workplace experience

A new apprenticeship programme has been launched to support the development of future talent within the Isle of Man’s financial services sector.

Developed through collaboration between the Department for Enterprise, University College Isle of Man (UCM), and industry representatives via Finance Isle of Man, the scheme is designed to provide a structured pathway for entry-level employees — including school leavers and career changers - seeking to begin a career in financial services.

The programme combines self-directed study toward a recognised professional qualification in fields such as banking, trusts, governance, and investments, followed by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business delivered by UCM.

The academic component of the course is scheduled to begin in January 2026.

Apprentices will benefit from a multi-layered approach that integrates self-study, classroom-based learning, and practical workplace experience.

The curriculum has been co-designed with industry partners to ensure it reflects real-world employer needs and supports long-term workforce development on the Island.

Colin Peters - Head of Banking at Cayman National and representing the Banking Association - who has helped lead the initiative, said the programme offers a “structured, practical route into the sector,” combining professional and academic growth with on-the-job learning.

He described it as a “transformative opportunity” for both employers and prospective employees.

Shane Moss, Assistant Programme Manager at UCM, said the course is in line with UCM’s model of collaborating closely with industry to develop relevant and accessible training opportunities.

The initiative forms part of the Isle of Man’s broader skills strategy and has received backing from the Skills IOM Board.

Michael Crowe, Chief Executive of Finance Isle of Man, says the programme is a clear example of public-private cooperation, aligned with the Island’s economic and skills objectives.

He added that the scheme signals a strong commitment to developing accessible, high-quality career pathways for residents pursuing a future in financial services.
