New application rules for LegCo aimed at boosting diversity

Members of the public have until early January to put their name forward

It’s hoped lifting previous nomination restrictions for prospective Legislative Council candidates will boost diversity and encourage fresh faces in the chamber.

The public can now submit their own applications for the upcoming elections.

However MHKs retain the final say on candidate selection leaving the wider public without a vote.

The upper house has often been criticised as an 'old boys' club' but President Laurence Skelly believes that an in-depth understanding of Tynwald’s inner workings isn’t strictly necessary:
