Kate Lord-Brennan uses Budget debate to call for spending reform

A Glenfaba and Peel MHK, and former minister, says Net Zero Isle of Man is 'superfluous and should be abandoned'.

Kate Lord-Brennan, who held the role of cabinet minister until late last year, has been reacting to the unveiling of the 2025/26 Budget.

In Tynwald today (18 February) Ms Lord-Brennan spoke of reform saying the system and structure of government needs updating. 

"Populist promotion of the day, dressed up as productive action and lecturing (yes, I am thinking about Net Zero Isle of Man) needs to be recognised as superfluous and abandoned." - Kate Lord-Brennan.

Ms Lord-Brennan called for government to 'set parameters and reorient towards core priorities and essential services':

In the lead up to the 2021 general election, when Ms Lord-Brennan was elected to represent the constituency, she told Manx Radio that the environment was one of her priorities.

In 2022 she brought forward a motion to Tynwald to set a target of reducing the Island's carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2035.

In December Tynwald voted to recognise the role that net-zero targets play in ‘strengthening the Manx economy’, having overturned a motion from Middle MHK Stu Peters for government to urgently revisit its net-zero targets and budgets.

Ms Kate Lord-Brennan, speaking at the time, said she believed Mr Peters’ original motion was ‘completely reasonable’.
