MNFU calls for stronger legislation to protect livestock

Farmers continuing to face threat of dog attacks

The Manx National Farmers Union is urging politicians to follow the lead of the UK Government and strengthen the Island’s livestock protection legislation.

As the lambing season gets underway, MNFU General Secretary Sarah Comish says farmers face the ever-present threat of dog attacks, the results of which can be horrific for animals and distressing and costly for farmers.

She says the agricultural community is saddened that, in the eyes of the law, livestock do not receive the same safeguards as domestic pets:

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is set to begin consulting on potential new laws to address livestock worrying. 

The consultation is expected to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the development of proposed measures to protect livestock from dog attacks.

Meanwhile, the Isle of Man Constabulary says it's important every attack is reported.
