Max Crookall receives three-month driving ban
A Legislative Council member’s son has been banned from the roads after driving without due care and attention in a car he wasn’t insured on.
Max Shorys Quilliam Crookall, of Marine Parade, Peel, appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse this week.
The 19-year-old, son of Tim Crookall MLC, pleaded guilty to both offences which took place shortly before 9am on October 7 last year.
The court heard a member of the public alerted police after spotting him overtaking twice across double white lines between Ballacraine and Union Mills.
Barry Swain, prosecuting, said police later spoke to Crookall about his driving and discovered his insurance policy didn't cover him on the Honda Integra he’d borrowed from a friend.
His advocate told the court losing his driving licence would mean losing his job and his apprenticeship.
Magistrates said the overtaking manoeuvres, one just before a bend and one below the crest of a hill, could have had extremely serious consequences.
They fined Crookall a total of £900, ordered him to pay £50 costs and banned him from driving for three months – after which he’ll have to retake his test.
