MLC calls for 'wider conversation' on how constitutional changes are made

Mr Clueit says he's 'deeply uncomfortable' that significant changes can be approved with a simple majority

An MLC says there needs to be a wider conversation about how constitutional change is made by Tynwald members.

Gary Clueit has told Manx Radio he's 'deeply uncomfortable' that constitutional matters can be decided on a one percent majority.

In a recent debate on the Bishop's vote, Mr Clueit brought forward a proposal that will allow the Bishop to retain the vote for five years or until the current postholder leaves her role.

The Constitution Bill will now return to the House of Keys, where MHKs will decide whether or not to support Mr Clueit's amendment; if it receives support from a simple majority it will be sent for Royal Assent.

When considered by MHKs at an earlier stage, 14 voted in support of the Bill and 10 against, while Mr Clueit's amendment was passed six in favour, two against in the Legislative Council.
