Minister wants to see greater focus on reuse over recycling

The DoI recently took over at the Northern Civic Amenity Site

The infrastructure minister believes there needs to be a greater focus on reusing instead of recycling to tackle waste on the Island.

Michelle Haywood's comments come ahead of the publication of a waste strategy in the autumn.

The Department of Infrastructure recently took over at the Northern Civic Amenity site after a disagreement over the funding of the facility.

The DoI is currently taking a bill through Tynwald that would give it more powers to intervene if there are similar challenges in the future.

The reuse section at NCAS has been closed since last year, while other sites have also seen reductions.

Despite this, Minister Haywood is keen to see reuse become more of a focus:

The founder of a charity that works to reduce litter on the Isle of Man says he absolutely supports the minister's position on reuse.

Beach Buddies Isle of Man has been a regular user of the four sites since it started its work to clean the Manx coast almost 20 years ago.

However, Bill Dale is calling for a single policy to be in place at all of the Island's civic amenity sites

He says never understood why some items are accepted at certain facilities but not others, and thinks the variation across the Island can be confusing:
