Julie Edge lays motion calling for two-term limit on Speaker and President posts

An MHK will argue in this month's Tynwald that holders of the roles of President of Tynwald or Speaker of the House of Keys should only be entitled to keep the job for two terms, before stepping away.

Onchan member Julie Edge has a motion down to be debated.

But she won't give her reasons for her move until later this month, nearer Tynwald.

We know that we will have a new President after Laurence Skelly announced he was stepping away from the job.

But who will challenge for the role?

In 2021 Mr Skelly's opponent was the present Keys Speaker, Juan Watterson.

Mr Watterson was elected to the Speaker's role unopposed in both 2016 and 2021 so he would be subject to Mrs Edge's motion, should she be successful in getting it accepted.

But then Mr Watterson may once again be challenging for the President's position.

This month's Tynwald sitting gets underway on 21 April.
