MHK reveals changes to Laxey sea defences plan

Prom wall to remain 4 ft high but taper off

A Garff MHK has revealed revised plans by the government to build a seawall in Laxey. 

Writing on social media, Daphne Caine says the Department of Infrastructure will soon submit new designs for sea defences in the village.

These include a 4ft seawall at the north end with a raised promenade walkway behind it, tapering to road level by the slipway.

Elsewhere, flood gates will be placed across beach access steps and Tent Road for in the event of a severe weather forecasts, and a walkway included alongside the harbour inside the proposed new wall.

The Department was forced back to the drawing board after initial plans proved unpopular during a consultation with Laxey residents.

Part of the DOI's initiative to prepare 'vulnerable settlements' against climate change, the defences are estimated to cost between £1.5 and £2 million.
