Meet the students developing an anti-spiking straw

Year 12 pupils taking part in Junior Achievement Isle of Man programme

A group of students from Ballakermeen High School are developing an anti-spiking drinking straw.

Called PureSip, the straw will include a testing strip which, when dipped into liquid, will change colour if certain chemicals or spiking agents are detected.

The Year 12 students are part of a team called Valoris, taking part in a programme run by Junior Achievement Isle of Man.

The charity works with young people on the Island, helping them gain the essential skills needed to get a job or start a business.

Valoris describes the product as: "A discreet, reliable straw that safeguards users by detecting chemical interference or spiking agents in drinks, ensuring confidence and peace of mind with every sip."

It says younger females around the age of 26 are the main demographic for the product, as they are statistically targeted the most in spiking attacks, particularly in nightclub and bar environments.
