Manager responds to online claims
Rumours about the nature of halal slaughter at the Isle of Man's Meat Plant have been quashed by a member of staff.
Posts on social media have been speaking out against the practice, saying it is cruel and querying whether the animals are stunned beforehand or not.
A statement has been issued online by Business Development Manager Leon Crompton-Jones, saying the Meat Plant is extremely proud of the high standards of animal welfare conducted there.
He says any claim of ritual slaughter being performed without first stunning the animal is entirely fictitious - all animals processed at the facility are rendered insensible to pain or suffering prior to any slaughtering taking place.
He adds that key operatives have been trained in global standards of animal welfare, in addition to the installation of CCTV in all stunning areas, in an effort to renew, monitor and maintain the plant's strict standards of welfare, which go above and beyond the minimum legislation and EC directives.
