'Liam Clarke Centre' is 'apt tribute' says welfare officer

The family of a Southern 100 marshal who was killed at last year’s event say he would be ‘buzzing’ about a tribute that’s been unveiled in his honour.

Sixty-six-year-old Liam Clarke died on 11 July 2023 following an incident in qualifying on the Billown Circuit.

Yesterday (8 July) on the first day of the 2024 event the marshal’s hut was renamed after the Wigan man; it will now be known as ‘The Liam Clarke Centre’.

Fundraising efforts after the Wigan man’s death also saw money raised for new privacy screens which are used at the scene of motorsport incidents.

Reverend John Caldwell is a welfare officer for Southern 100 and says the work done in his name is an ‘absolutely wonderful tribute’ to him:

The inquest into Mr Clarke’s death is due to reconvene at Douglas Courthouse on 7 August.
