Gardai shelled out for IoM outsourcing

Police in the Republic of Ireland paid a Manx firm more than a million pounds a month to operate mobile speed detection vans, it's being reported there.

RTÉ News claims that the Isle of Man company behind the 'GoSafe' fleet of vehicles was being given more money than it was making in fines.

The high costs of outsourcing were said to cover operations, purchasing specialist equipment, and having company staff attend court cases.

The Irish authorities had a contract with the company between 2010 and this year - over which time more than a million fines were issued.

But GoSafe's operations have stirred controversy in recent years.

In 2014, a judge threw out nearly 100 cases against motorists on the grounds staff were not authorised to give evidence in court.
