Helen Hughes' mosaic explores the intersection of probability theory and visual design
A Manx artist has been shortlisted in a prestigious international competition celebrating the intersection of science and art.
Helen Hughes’ paper mosaic piece Sacred Love has been recognised by judges in the Sci-Art competition, which is sponsored by the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research.
The work explores themes of probability theory and diffusive processes, using an arrangement of irregular paper tiles to mirror stochastic systems found in nature.
She believes the piece reflects how local randomness can lead to large-scale patterns, drawing parallels with phenomena such as neural networks and social interactions.
