Blade secreted in belt buckle

A court’s heard how a man got into a drunken row with his family and pulled a dagger on them, sending them fleeing from their home in terror.

Fifty-two-year-old Simon Craig Jones, of Park Avenue in Douglas, appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to one count of affray at his home shortly before 7.30pm on 6 August.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing Jones, who has a longstanding drink problem, turned violent during an argument and produced the blade from a special belt buckle.

Jones wielded the knife in front of his wife and stepchildren, shouting he carried it for protection but would stab somebody.

Miss Cubbon said he then made his stepson touch the blade, saying “that would cut you, that, wouldn’t it?”

When police arrived the family were outside the home and officers persuaded Jones to come outside to be arrested.

Magistrates turned down a bail application and Jones was remanded in custody until he appears again for sentencing on 5 September.
