Man given suspended sentence over crash which claimed girlfriend's life

A man who lost control of his car and crashed head-on into a van resulting in the death of his girlfriend has this week been given a 12-month suspended sentence.

Twenty-two-year-old Jay Waters was convicted of causing death by careless driving in August following the crash on 25 October 2019.

Nineteen-year-old Katie Robley died in the intensive care unit at Noble's Hospital from injuries sustained in the collision near to the Santon Motel.

Victim statements were read out in court, with Miss Robley's father, Anthony Robley, saying his soul had been 'torn in half'.

Katie's mother, Rebecca Taylor, said Waters would "never have deliberately" put her daughter in harm's way.

Afterwards, she asked Deemster Graeme Cook not to send Waters to prison.

Suspending the sentence, Deemster Cook said: "Nothing I say or do will bring Miss Robley back. You know that, and you will have to live with that for the rest of your life."
