Man failed to declare work while claiming benefits

41-year-old handed a conditional discharge and ordered to repay amount overpaid

A prisoner has been given a conditional discharge after continuing to claim benefits while he was working.

Stephen Joseph Keig, who's serving a prison sentence for unrelated matters, pleaded guilty to failing to give notice that he had started employment while receiving benefits.

Between June and August last year, the 41-year-old was overpaid £2,331.55 while failing to declare he was working as a delivery driver.

His advocate said Keig had understood he was able to work part-time while continuing to be entitled to benefits, but that he did exceed the limit.

As well as a 12-month conditional discharge, magistrates ordered Keig to pay back the overpayment after he's completed is prison sentence.
