Steam Packet Company confirms sailings will be impacted

The Isle of Man Ferry Terminal in Liverpool is to be upgraded in the coming weeks.

The facility at Prince’s Half-Tide Dock opened its doors in June last year and is estimated to have cost between £70-75million.

The Department of Infrastructure says an 'installation at the facility has to be adjusted for operational reasons', but work could not be carried out during the summer when the fastcraft Manannan docked at the terminal every day.

It says 'in berthing trials for Manxman and Ben-my-Chree last year, it was discovered that, at lower tides, mooring lines clashed with a dolphin fender' and as a result, 'some winter sailings were affected'.

A dolphin fender is a 'protective cushioning device mounted on a marine structure to absorb the impact of a vessel during berthing or accidental collisions'.

The issue affects both Manxman and Ben-my-Chree at low tides. Manannan is not affected.

The DoI says it's employing contractors in Merseyside to carry out the work, however the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has confirmed that some sailings will be impacted.

It also confirmed its hope that: 'In the long term, the work will ensure fewer disruptions to the schedule and a more robust connection between the Isle of Man and Liverpool'.

SAILINGS

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has confirmed its schedule alterations in light of the work.

Sailings to and from Liverpool on 1 and 2 November will now operate to Heysham, with coach transfers to Liverpool Terminal laid on for affected passengers.

The company says it is 'in constant contact with the DoI in order to be able to implement the scheduled service as quickly as possible'.

Managing Director Brian Thomson added: “We know this is frustrating and disappointing for passengers.

"However, by making limited changes to the schedule now, it is hoped the necessary works can be undertaken to allow us to offer a comprehensive schedule of weekend sailings to Liverpool throughout the rest of the winter.”

All affected passengers will be contacted by the company's reservations team. Should any passengers wish to cancel their sailings, full refunds will be made.
