'Live-fire' training facility unveiled

Complex on Richmond Hill opens

Things are really heating up at the unveiling of a new training facility for the Island's fire fighters. 

The 'live fire' complex on Richmond Hill, near Douglas, will offer crews bespoke on-Island fire-fighting practice for the first time.  

A controlled fire was set at the site today to simulate the extreme heat, smoke, humidity and restricted visibility that firefighters face on the job.

The facility consists of specially-made compartments to create a realistic environment for exercises to improve rescue techniques, and tackling fully-developed fires.

Training for the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service was previously held in the UK, costing the Manx government £50,000 a year whilst depleting the staff available to respond to an emergency.

Tynwald approved the construction of the complex last year, to cut costs and ensure the fire service runs year-round at full capacity.
