Lifeboat Operations Manager reflects on 45 years with Peel RNLI

A Lifeboat Operations Manager and member of Peel RNLI for 45 years has been reflecting on his time with the organisation following his retirement. 

Allen Corlett joined the station in 1981, holding a variety of roles in the decades since; Council Member, Admin Officer, Launch Authority and Lifeboat Operations Manager.

The RNLI says he's been a 'constant, steady and trusted presence' within the station.

His eyesight kept him from being a crew member when he first joined, keeping operations running smoothly from the shore.

Even during some of the most high profile incidents in Manx waters such as the sinking of the Solway Harvester.

Speaking to Manx Radio, Allen said: "I've always been interested in the RNLI from a young age because I've had family members connected with the station for well over 100 years now. 

"My great-grandfather was on the crew of the John Monk, which rescued the people from the St George lifeboat. And so I just always had an interest."

And Allen's familial links to the station continue, with his sons now also giving their time as volunteers at Peel RNLI. 

The reins of Peel Lifeboat Station are now handed over to Paul Thompson, who’s taken over the role of Lifeboat Operations Manager.

Paul says: "Allen’s 45 years of service represent an outstanding commitment to Peel RNLI and to the wider community. His contribution as Lifeboat Operations Manager has been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for everything he has given to the station.

"I’m excited to be taking over as LOM for this next chapter of our lifesaving history and look forward to supporting our incredible volunteers.

"It is both a challenge and an honour to continue the work that Allen has delivered here at Peel Lifeboat Station."
