Manx pharmacies to offer free checks to encourage better health
Island residents over 40 are being encouraged to 'know their numbers' when it comes to their blood pressure.
Public Health Isle of Man's launched a new campaign this week.
High blood pressure can be linked to serious health conditions including strokes and heart disease.
Making sure it's in a healthy range can improve your heart, brain and kidney function.
This week (8-14 September), free blood pressure checks will be offered at participating pharmacies across the Island to encourage more people to make checking their numbers a habit.
Anyone under 40 should have their BP measured every three years, while for those over 40 it's recommended to check it every year.
Dr Lakshman Paudyal, Consultant Cardiologist at Manx Care, says: "High blood pressure is often symptomless, which means that a making a regular check part of your routine is essential to monitor and notice any changes.
"Those who already have a diagnosis of high blood pressure may need more frequent blood pressure checks, as advised by their doctor."
Minister for the Cabinet Office, David Ashford MHK says: "Knowing your blood pressure numbers and acting early can prevent serious illness and save lives.
"This campaign highlights how high blood pressure is responsible for more than half of all strokes and heart attacks, yet 80 per cent of cardiovascular-related deaths are preventable.
"We encourage adults of any age to go to a participating pharmacy or Wellbeing Centre to start to make checking your numbers a habit.’
