40-year-old admits possession of offensive weapon

A Jurby man will be sentenced in December after turning up at his cousin’s house with an axe.

Martin James Kelly, of The Threshold, wanted to warn the man to stay away from his family.

At Douglas Courthouse the 40-year-old admitted possessing an offensive weapon and using threatening, abusive or insulting words and behaviour.

Kelly arrived at a property on Spring Valley Road in Douglas, on 19 September, with the hatchet having consumed alcohol.

He knocked on the door with the handle of the weapon and began to shout and swear – he did not go inside and no-one came out.

The court heard there had been ‘ill feeling’ between the relations for some time.

A social enquiry report, and a psychiatric report, have been requested before Kelly is sentenced on 1 December; he’s been bailed until that date.
