John Wannenburgh: 'Commitment, compassion and an unwavering sense of duty'

Tributes following the unexpected death of Douglas North MHK

The death of a Douglas North MHK has been described as a ‘significant loss to our Island’.

John Wannenburgh died unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep last night (2 August).

He had served as the MHK for Douglas North since being elected to the House of Keys in 2021.

'Widely respected'

Paying tribute to him Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said: “John’s passing is a significant loss to our Island.

“He served the people of the Isle of Man with commitment, integrity and a genuine sense of public duty.  

“He was widely respected for his contribution to public life particularly as member for Douglas North where he worked as a steadfast advocate for his constituents.

“John always listened, offered support and worked to improve the lives of those he served.”

Mr Wannenburgh, who was born in Cleethorpes in England, held political roles in the Department of Home Affairs and Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

Mr Cannan said ministers and colleagues had valued his ‘scrutiny and oversight’.

“On behalf of the Council of Ministers and people across the Island, I extend my deepest condolences to John’s family, friends, colleagues and to all those whose lives he touched.”

Mr Wannenburgh’s last public engagement had been at a Summerland memorial on Sunday (2 August) evening - an event Mr Cannan told Manx Radio he’d also attended:

'Unwavering advocate'

The Douglas North MHK held political responsibility for the Isle of Man Fire and Rescue Service during his time within the Department of Home Affairs which began in 2021.

Home Affairs and Justice Minister Jane Poole-Wilson described Mr Wanneburgh’s death as ‘untimely’ adding he was a ‘diligent and loyal’ member of her department.

“He took his role seriously, while also bringing humour and light, and was respected by everyone with whom he worked. He will be greatly missed.”

Chief Fire Officer Mark Christian added: “From the moment he took up the role John became a tremendous supporter of the Fire and Rescue Service and a genuine champion of the work our people undertake every day.

“Whether visiting staff at fire stations across the Island, raising awareness of the service within the Department of Home Affairs and across government, or simply taking the time to listen and engage with our firefighters, John was an unwavering advocate for the Fire and Rescue Service.

“Thank you, John, for your leadership, your wise counsel, your friendship and your unwavering support of the Fire and Rescue Service. You will be greatly missed.” 

Mr Wannenburgh had, in 2025, also moved into the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

Minister Clare Barber said he’d made a ‘positive impact’ in a short time describing him as an ‘all-round incredible person’.

'Excellent ambassador'

Mr Wannenburgh’s death was announced to his Tynwald colleagues by President of Tynwald Juan Watterson.

The former Rushen MHK said he was ‘stunned’ to learn about the ‘sudden passing’ of his friend and colleague adding Tynwald would be a ‘less colourful place without him’:

“He was certainly relishing the prospect of the 2026 election as an opportunity to promote the work, he had done with DHA, DEFA, and the Economic Policy Review Committee.”

'Shining light'

Mr Wannenburgh had declared his intention to seek re-election in Douglas North in September’s General Election.

His constituency colleague David Ashford described him as one of the ‘kindest, warm hearted’ people he’s ever had the privilege to know describing working alongside him as ‘an absolute joy’.

He added: “John loved life and was loved by all those who came into contact with him.”

Mr Ashford told Manx Radio he cared deeply for his constituents:

“The word devastated just does not do it justice.

"Today another shining light on our Island has gone out far too soon.”

'Kind and thoughtful' 

Fellow backbench MHKs have also paid their own tributes to him.

Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Tim Glover described him as ‘very kindhearted’ whilst Jason Moorhouse said he was a ‘big man with a big heart’.

In a post on social media Mr Moorhouse added: “At times politics can be over serious and over complicated but John has an amazing ability to cut through that.”

Ayre and Michael MHK Tim Johnston said Mr Wannenburgh was passionate about ‘serving his constituents’ adding: “He had a great sense of humour and called a spade a spade."

Garff MHK Daphne Caine said Mr Wannenburgh had served Douglas North ‘diligently’ for five years describing him as ‘quiet, unflappable and with a warm, dry wit’.

“He would always bring a glimmer of “good news” into the dullest meeting or Tynwald sitting.”

Onchan MHK Rob Callister described Mr Wannenburgh as being a ‘genuinely kind and thoughtful man’ with a ‘wicked sense of humour’.

Douglas South MHK Claire Christian said Mr Wannenburgh, who she sat next to in the House of Keys and Tynwald, was 'completely genuine'. 

In a post on Facebook she wrote: "He never tried to be anything other than himself.

"He was as straight as they come, never wavering from what he believed was right, and always prepared to tell things exactly as they were, even when they were difficult to hear.

"That integrity, fun and love for life earned him enormous respect across politics and far beyond it.

"John cared deeply about his constituents and carried that responsibility with immense pride.

"Public service wasn't a title to him; it was a commitment.

"He wanted to make life better for the people who had placed their trust in him, and he never lost sight of that.

"This Island was incredibly fortunate to have someone like John.

"He led with courage, grit, humility and honesty, and he made our Island a better place simply by being part of it.  

"I was so lucky to have been able to sit next to you all these years, with Clare Barber, you became a good friend and someone who was there for all of us."

Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper said he was ‘grateful’ to have been able to call Mr Wannenburgh a friend saying he would miss his ‘kind and thoughtful company’.  

Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood said she would miss ‘his grin at me across the Tynwald chamber’.

“He was a great constituency MHK and became a confident member of Tynwald Court with a talent for nailing home what others hadn’t yet said.”

Manx Utilities

Mr Wannenburgh served as chair of the Manx Utilities Authority from 2023 and was also a member of the Economic Policy Review Committee.

Describing his business perspective as ‘valuable’ Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan described him as a ‘fair and forthright man’ who spoke up for those ‘most in need’.

“His Tynwald contributions were short and to the point and all the more impactful for that.

"He shared and showed his own judgement, compassion and independence of mind.”

She also said he was ‘diligent’ in his role at the MUA particularly in pushing forward, and consistently seeking progress on, Peel sewage works.

MU Executive Director Adrian Dobbins described Mr Wannenburgh’s leadership and guidance as ‘exceptional’.

He told Manx Radio he’d brought ‘integrity, wisdom and an unwavering commitment to public service’ to the role:

'Respect and gratitude'

Douglas City Council says it is ‘deeply saddened’ by Mr Wannenburgh’s death and - in a sentiment shared by others paying tribute - has extended its sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Council Leader Devon Watson said: “On behalf of Douglas City Council I would like to offer our heartfelt condolences to John’s family and loved ones.

“John dedicated himself to public service and worked tirelessly to make our Island a better place.

“He served the people of North Douglas with commitment, compassion and an unwavering sense of duty.

“Today, we remember him with respect and gratitude and our thoughts are with all those who knew him.”

The Mayor of Douglas, Councillor Steven Crellin, added: “John was widely respected for his contribution to public life and for the steadfast way in which he represented the people of North Douglas.

“He took a keen interest in the work of Douglas City Council, acknowledged the important role local government plays in the capital, and he was always willing to work collaboratively on initiatives that improved life for residents and supported many of our community events.

“His passing is a great loss to our Island and he will be remembered with warmth and appreciation.”

Family man

Mr Wannenburgh was married with three sons; his brother Walter is the Island's Attorney General.

He was also the owner/operator of the Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club.

The House of Keys will be formally dissolved on 13 August.
