The leader of an Island teaching union has dismissed calls from the UK education secretary for longer school days and shorter holidays.
Michael Gove told an education conference this week the current system was designed for a 19th century agricultrual economy and doesn't meet the neeeds of a modern society.
Mr Gove wants to extend the school day to 4.30pm and limit summer holidays to four weeks.
Branch secretary for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in the Island Andrew Shipley says many teachers already work extra hours after school helping pupils, and in the holidays.
He says the terms are long enough:
