Island 'needs to look globally' when considering new laws

Social worker seeking MLC seat says Australia and New Zealand are 'decades ahead'

The Isle of Man needs to look globally when considering new legislation, instead of going for the easiest option, according to one of the candidates standing in this week's Legislative Council election.

Kirstie Morphet has been a social worker for 25 years and will be vying for one of four seats in tomorrow's (Tuesday) vote.

Her work often includes elements of criminal justice - working with those who've appeared in court.

She says restorative justice in countries like Australia and New Zealand could be a better example for the Island than our nearest neighbours:

The 15 candidates standing are:

1. Bill Henderson (SITTING)

2. Rob Mercer (SITTING)

3. Kerry Sharpe (SITTING)

4. Julia Bell

5. Claire Louise Newall

9. Ronald Paul Berry

10. Mark Jason Cleator

11. Martyn John Perkins

12. Andrew Stuart Jones

The election takes place in Tuesday's (4 March) sitting of the House of Keys.
