Island hit by significant flooding; cost of damage unclear

The Island has been ravaged by ferocious storms which have caused significant damage.

Ramsey, Castletown and Douglas have borne the brunt with severe flooding in many coastal areas and subsequent power cuts.

The clean-up operation began once the storm waters had started to recede.

Jeff Robinson, the operations director for the Department of Infrastructure, says the damage seems to have been very much as predicted.

Civil defence volunteers conducted welfare checks in Hope Street and Douglas Street in Castletown this afternoon.

Homes close to the harbour in the town were flooded - some householders have seen up to 12 inches of sea water cascade into the downstairs of their properties.
