Island could ban single-use plastics

Views sought on new government proposals

The sale of certain single-use plastics could be banned on the Isle of Man under new government proposals.

If approved, government says it would make the Island the first place in the British Isles to outlaw all the items on the EU Plastic Directive.

These include single-use bags, cotton bud sticks, cutlery, plates, straws, food containers and balloon sticks.

Other products made of expanded polystyrene and oxo-degradable plastic could also be prohibited.

Government claims the move would play a big part in their commitment to combatting climate change.

A public consultation has been launched asking residents and businesses what they think about the proposals.

People have until 1 September to give their views - a link to the consultation is available here.

Last week, government launched its Plastic Free Business Scheme which encourages hospitality vendors to reduce or remove unneccessary single-use items.
