Is streamlining of government saving enough money?

Is the team behind an internal streamlining process at the government powerful enough and saving enough money?

They were among the questions posed by Tynwald’s Public Accounts Committee yesterday.

The five-man committee chaired by Michael MHK Alf Cannan heard evidence from a team made up of Treasury Minister Eddie Teare, Chief Secretary Will Greenhow and programme director Dan Davies.

The three explained how they help departments think differently about how they deliver services.

Mr Davies there’d been £5.6 million of savings in government over the past five years.

Under questioning, Treasury Minister Eddie Teare said he disagree with an auditor’s report which said he could face a conflict of interest because he could both recommend projects to departments and then decide whether they were funded.

But he told the committee departmental budgets have to be agreed by the Council of Ministers before they were put to Tynwald each year.
