IOM Whitehaven boat service could launch by Spring 2027

Over 3,000 people respond to survey

A UK MP believes a service connecting the Isle of Man to Whitehaven could launch by Spring next year, if all goes as planned.

That’s from the member for Whitehaven and Workington, Josh MacAlister, speaking on BBC Cumbria this morning.

Over the weekend, he launched a survey about a possible ‘ferry service’ between both areas which will help rejuvenate Whitehaven and add more tourists to each area.

He also revealed he had interest from an operator with a 12-seat vessel which could offer day trips, short breaks and trips during major events on the Island.

It’s not the first time he has suggested the travel link.

In 2024, during a meeting with Chief Minister Alfred Cannan and Deputy Chief Minister Jane Poole-Wilson he said a discussion had taken place to bring back a passenger ferry service between the areas as 'it was one of the most popular suggestions in a Whitehaven town centre survey."

'BBC Cumbria Interview'

Manx Radio has reached out to the MP for an interview but speaking on the breakfast show there (2 September), he said the return of the service is something that's been welcomed by residents there.
