IOM Medical Society gives backing to Tynwald amendment

MHK to bring forward proposal at next Keys sitting

An amendment to the Assisted dying Bill, which would remove Manx Care and its staff from any involvement in the delivery of assisted death, has received backing from the Isle of Man Medical Society.

The society represents all doctors  on the Island and has previously outlined its strong opposition to the legalisation of assisted dying due to what it claims would be the likely effect on Manx society and vulnerable patients in particular.

The amendment will be proposed by Peel and Glenfaba MHK Kate Lord-Brennan at next Tuesday's sitting of the House of Keys.

Ms Lord-Brennan believes legal provision for assisted dying should be kept firmly outside of National Healthcare, and must have robust oversight and regulation.

The Peel and Glenfaba MHK has already voted against the assisted dying bill, which is being piloted through the legislature by Ramsey member Dr Alex Allinson.

Outlining her concerns on social media Ms Lord-Brennan says provision of assisted dying could be deeply dangerous in healthcare where issues, choices and expectations can get muddied and conflicted. She believes healthcare workers could be put in a position which sits at odds with their very purpose and professional practice.
