Interest shown in former Jurby RAF camp

Submissions now being assessed

Officials at the Department of Infrastructure say there's been great interest shown in redeveloping a former RAF camp in the north of the Island.

The 24-acre site in Jurby was opened by the air force in 1939 to help protect Belfast and Liverpool from German air raids during the second world war.

The opportunity to develop the former RAF camp was advertised by the Department over the summer - it was eager to hear what kinds of proposals would come forward.

It's had suggestions ranging from recreational facilities, to new premises for start-up businesses. 

Ideas also arose from two meetings held with local residents in late July.

All submissions are now being assessed by the Public Estates and Housing Division, who'll next report to political members.

Julie Edge MHK, DOI member with responsibility for housing, says the size of the site make it ideal for a development with plenty to offer.

She hopes any development can act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the north.
