House of Keys given notice of possible extended sitting

Debate on the Assisted Dying Bill continues

Members of the House of Keys are set to discuss the clauses of the Assisted Dying Bill once again today (25 June).

An urgent question regarding the reasoning behind the cancellation of the Isle of Man Food and Drink Festival is also scheduled, tabled by Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse.

Upstairs in the Legislative Council Chamber, Bill Henderson MLC will ask for the Constitution Bill to go to a committee of three LegCo members for consideration. If he fails, then members will move to the Bills LegCo clauses stage.

Returning to the Keys chamber, the House has twenty questions on its paper.

Three starred questions are on the agenda, covering topics from the role of human resources in government recruitment, the health minister’s duty towards assisted dying, and the cost increase of the proposed windfarm at Earystane.

Other questions will focus on the Steam Packet Company’s strategy, automatic number plate recognition, secondary school expulsions, and the trial of cannabis-based medical products.

Douglas North MHK David Ashford will ask the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture about progress regarding a food hygiene rating system.

Onchan MHK Julie Edge will request Enterprise Minister Tim Johnston to publish the outcome of the consultation on prescribed persons for whistleblowing.

Continued discussion on the assisted dying clauses is expected to occupy considerable time.

Consequently, Speaker Juan Watterson has allowed the Keys to sit tomorrow as well to ensure all parliamentary business is completed.

The sitting starts at 10am, you can listen live on Manx Radio AM 1368, DAB, online and on smartphone apps - if you want to listen to the continuation of the clauses consideration you can follow via Tynwald Listen Live.

Demonstrators - both for and against assisted dying laws - had already gathered outside the House by 8am.
