Hosepipe ban to remain in place despite rainfall

Water stocks at 16-year low

It's been confirmed the hosepipe ban will remain in place, despite the recent wet weather.

Manx Utilities says water stocks are at the lowest levels seen in the Island for 16 years.

MU says most of the rainfall last month was absorbed by the dry ground, and has not fed into the Island's reservoirs.

Higher than usual evaporation levels during the prolonged dry spell this summer mean the recent wet weather hasn't been enough to compensate.

The long-range weather forecast predicts rainfall will remain lower than average for the time of year for the next two to three months.

The situation could have a knock-on effect next year, if the reservoirs don't recover during the winter months.

MU Chair Dr Alex Allinson says, unless the predictions change, the ban must stay in place to protect the Island's drinking water supply.

The ban, which was introduced at the start of August, has seen a 10% drop in mains water usage.
