Horse Trams celebrate 150 years

The system was completed in 1876

A century and a half after Thomas Lightfoot came up with the idea of running a horse tram track around Douglas Bay, a year of celebration gets underway. 

The tram system was completed in 1876.

In the next few months, train and tram enthusiasts will be able to enjoy photography specials, track tours and workshop and depot tours.

A programme of events will be published in the Spring.

At the same time, discussions continue between the Infrastructure Department and the Treasury about the cost and the desire to take the present horse tram line, which stops currently at the War Memorial on Douglas prom, back to the Sea Terminal.

In the next few months, it may become clearer if and when the horse trams will once again run the full length of the Promenade in the near future.
