Highest level of A&E admissions for respiratory illness in five years

57 per cent increase since 2019

New figures show admissions to the A&E department for respiratory illnesses are at the highest level seen in the last five years.

Data from government's 'surveillance of seasonal respiratory illnesses' has highlighted a 57-percent increase since 2019.

The data considers influenza types A and B, respiratory syncytial virus and Covid-19, all of which contribute to respiratory illness.

The largest rises are among those aged between 15-44 and those over the age of 65.

By comparison to the UK, attendances to the emergency departments in England for 'acute bronchiolitis and acute respiratory infections' have reportedly decreased.

However, 'influenza-like illness' attendances have increased across all groups, with 'Covid-like' illness remaining stable.
