Have your say on microchipping dogs

Micro-chipping all dogs would ensure they are returned to their owners more quickly if they stray.

That's the belief of the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture which is consulting the public over plans to make micro-chipping of dogs compulsory.

DEFA says the move would also encourage responsible dog ownership.

In England, microchipping dogs will be compulsory from next April.

Subject to the outcome of the consultation, the Act will be amended to introduce compulsory micro-chipping and offences including failure to micro-chip and failure to notify change of ownership.

DEFA Minister Richard Ronan says the current licensing system is old, bureaucratic and doesn't properly address the problems associated with irresponsible owners.

It's claimed the move would also improve animal welfare and act as a deterrent against dog theft.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 1st May.
