Govt won't step in to take over horse trams

Chief Minister says no chance of govt intervention

The Chief Minister has admitted he’s saddened by the decision of Douglas Council to discontinue the Island’s horse trams.

However, Allan Bell insists there is no question of government stepping in to run the service.

Councillors agreed it was no longer financially viable at a private meeting on Thursday.

The 140-year-old service made a £263,000 loss last year, while proposals to merge the stables site with a tramway hub would have cost around £3 million.

Mr Bell understands people will have mixed emotions.
